It’s Not About Having Kids, It’s About Having a Plan: What New Retirement Research Actually Shows

It’s Not About Having Kids, It’s About Having a Plan: What New Retirement Research Actually Shows

September 10, 2026

Here’s a stat that stopped us in our tracks. A recent Allianz Life study found that 72% of parents feel confident they’ll hit their retirement savings goal, compared to just 54% of people without kids. At first glance, it looks like having children is the secret to retirement confidence.

It’s not.

Dig one layer deeper and the real answer shows up: 62% of people without children don’t have a written financial plan, compared to 42% of parents. That’s the actual gap. Kids don’t build confidence. A plan does. Parenthood just tends to force the money conversation sooner, because tuition bills and pediatrician visits don’t wait for “someday.”

If you’ve been putting off writing an actual plan because life hasn’t forced your hand yet, consider this your nudge.

The Numbers Behind the Worry

The same study found some things worth sitting with, whether you have kids or not:

  • 61% of people without children say they’re so focused on covering day-to-day expenses that retirement savings feels out of reach right now
  • 71% worry rising living costs will eat into their retirement years
  • 66% are concerned about affording long-term care
  • 54% worry housing costs alone will limit how much they can save

Parents aren’t exactly coasting either. Education costs and childcare expenses show up constantly as reasons saving feels harder, and nearly half of Americans say retirement savings concerns actually factored into their decision about whether to have kids at all. Millennials, in particular, are thinking about this earlier than previous generations did.

The takeaway isn’t “have kids to feel better about retirement.” It’s that a written plan, one that accounts for your actual expenses, goals, and timeline, is one of the most protective things you can do for your future self. That’s the whole idea behind what we call the Dream Retirement Process: get it on paper, get it structured, and stop guessing.

Meanwhile, the Market Is Sending Mixed Signals

After a string of record highs, markets have cooled off and drifted sideways to slightly lower over the past few sessions. Nothing alarming, but worth noting.

Second-quarter earnings, on the other hand, have been genuinely strong. NVIDIA blew past estimates, and the rally has broadened beyond the usual mega-cap names, with small caps finally getting some attention again.

That said, there’s a growing conversation about whether AI stocks are starting to look like a bubble. We’re not calling the top here, but it’s on our radar, and it should probably be on yours too if a large chunk of your portfolio is tech-heavy. We’ve been actively diversifying client portfolios toward strong companies that don’t depend on the AI trade, and several of those names are up nearly 40% this year on their own merits.

If you’re not sure how exposed your portfolio actually is to any single sector or theme, that’s a conversation worth having sooner rather than later.

Why So Many People Are Suddenly Playing It Safe

A separate study from Northwestern Mutual backs up what we’ve been seeing in client conversations lately. 71% of people said they’d rather protect what they have than chase higher returns, and 43% have become noticeably more risk-averse over the past year alone, compared to only 31% who’ve leaned into more risk.

Interestingly, younger generations are still more willing to trade stability for upside than older ones, which tracks. The closer you get to retirement, the more that “safe money” starts to matter.

This is really the whole philosophy behind moving money from red to green, shifting a portion of your portfolio out of pure market risk and into vehicles that offer more protection. Right now, some of those options are producing returns in the 6 to 10% range annually with no downside market risk, and a few even come with CD-like liquidity. It’s not about abandoning growth. It’s about knowing which risks are actually worth taking at your stage of life.

The Life Insurance Benefit Most People Never Think About

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, and it felt like the right time to bring up something that gets overlooked constantly: life insurance isn’t just about what happens after you’re gone. Done right, it can actually work for you while you’re still here.

A few ways it shows up in a solid financial plan:

  • Financial security for your family, whether that’s from an unexpected death or the need for long-term care down the road
  • Legacy planning, so you can leave something behind for the people or causes that matter most to you
  • Funding future goals, like a child’s education, retirement income, or even starting a business
  • Business continuity, if you’re a business owner and need to protect what you’ve built
  • Tax advantages, which can help your money grow more efficiently over time

One thing that gets missed constantly: young families often assume life insurance is something to think about “later.” It isn’t. If something happened tomorrow, would your kids and grandkids be protected? That’s not a fun conversation to start, but it’s a necessary one, and it’s one worth having out of love, not fear.

Confidence about retirement doesn’t come from age, income, or whether you have kids. It comes from having an actual plan, one that accounts for market swings, your risk tolerance, and the protection your family needs no matter what happens.

If you don’t have that plan written down yet, or if it’s been a while since you looked at it, now’s a good time to change that. Reply to this or give us a call, and let’s map out what your Dream Retirement actually looks like.
