Creating a Strong Portfolio and Honoring Veterans

November 11, 2025

Strength. Strategy. Service.

A solid investment portfolio isn’t built overnight. It’s shaped by discipline, patience, and the willingness to adapt — much like a strong military. Both require a plan, a mission, and the courage to stay steady when the world feels uncertain.

As we honor our veterans and active troops, it’s fitting to draw inspiration from their values strategy, preparedness, and resilience, and apply them to how we invest. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned investor, understanding the four key investing styles: passive, active, strategic, and tactical can help you build a portfolio that stands strong through any market conditions.

🧭 Passive Investing

Passive investing is all about tracking the market, not trying to beat it. Instead of constantly buying and selling, you simply mirror the performance of a market index like the S&P 500.

With this approach, you accept the market’s ups and downs.

In simple terms: Passive management is the typical buy-and-hold style.

⚔️ Active Investing: Taking Command

Active investing takes a more hands-on approach. To better understand this, and in honor of our Veterans, let’s use a military comparison.

A strong military operates with a clear strategic plan that determines where to station troops (which funds/stocks/bonds to purchase), how many troops to place in each location (how much to allocate to each), and how those troops are trained (the due diligence process).

This reflects a long-term strategy but with the flexibility to adapt and move strategically when circumstances change.

In short: Active investing means staying in control — being agile to move as and when is needed.

🎯 Strategic vs. Tactical: Lessons from the Military

Let’s take this comparison one step further.

A strong military has a strategic plan — a long-term vision that determines where troops are stationed, how resources are distributed, and what objectives must be met. In investing, that’s your strategic allocation — deciding which fund/stocks/bonds to buy, how much to allocate, and how to balance risk across your portfolio.

But even the best long-term strategy needs tactical precision — short-term actions designed to seize opportunity or minimize threat. That’s where tactical investing comes in: identifying when to enter or exit a position based on signals, indicators, or shifts in the market.

Think of tactical investing as a special mission: well-prepared, calculated, and focused on short-term results without losing sight of the long-term goal.

A balanced portfolio combines both — strategy for structure, and tactics for flexibility.

💪 Building a Strong, Resilient Portfolio

A strong portfolio, much like a strong military, needs:

  • A clear mission (your financial goals – what you want!)
  • A strategic base (long-term investment plan – what you need)
  • A tactical edge ( monitering and adaptability)
  • And most importantly — constant vigilance.

It’s always a good time to review your risk exposure, diversify wisely, and get a personal risk assessment to ensure your portfolio can withstand any turbulence ahead.
