Examples: Fixed indexed annuities, fixed annuities, some whole life and universal life insurance policies

What is Green Money?

Green money refers to protected growth assets. They offer the potential for relatively moderate interest rates, are tax-deferred or tax free and usually offer partial withdrawals without penalties (although withdrawals may be subject to ordinary income taxes, and an additional 10% federal penalty if you are under age 59-1/2). The principal is generally guaranteed and previous interest credits are retained as interest if the terms of the product are met.

Generally, green money assets like annuities and insurance offer only partial withdrawals without a penalty for the first few years. In the investing world, people use the term “fixed income asset,” which is most widely used when Wall Street talks about bonds. When you buy a bond, your money will be given back to you after it matures. Except … there’s a  problem: there are no guarantees that it will! That’s why when we talk about green money, we mean annuity type assets or CDs, not bonds. These types of assets obey the three rules about green money.

Green Money Rules

  1. Protect your principal
  2. Retain your interest earned
  3. Guarantee an income (if and when needed)
